The Cobscook Trails Project

Cobscook Trails is a cooperative project of conservation landowners and community partners to expand opportunities for nature-based recreation and tourism in eastern Washington County.  It began in 1996 and has been coordinated by the Quoddy Regional Land Trust since 1997.

Cobscook Trails partners include, as well as QRLT: The Nature Conservancy, Maine Coast Heritage Trust, Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, Maine Department of Conservation – Bureau of Parks and Lands, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service – Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge, and local sponsoring businesses, organizations and individuals.

The Trail Guide

QRLT distributes Cobscook Trails: a guide to walking opportunities around Cobscook Bay and Bold Coast Region, a 55 page booklet describing walks on 19 area properties.  The booklet costs $7.00 ($10.00 including postage and handling).

Trial Guides can be purchased at the following local outlets:

Whiting:  Cobscook Bay Area Chamber, Quoddy Regional Land Trust, Whiting Corner Store, Puffin Pines

Lubec:  Northern Tides West Quoddy Gifts

Machias: Coffins True Value, Machias Bay Area Chamber of Commerce, Whole Life Market & Café’, Woodwind Gallery

Eastport:  The Commons. Eastport Windjammers, Moose Island Marine

Calais:  Calais Book Shop &  St. Croix Valley Chamber of Commerce

The guide gives directions, trail information, nature highlights, safety tips, and ownership information for each trail.

Trail Stewardship – How You Can Help

Contact us if you or your organization would like to Adopt a Trail or help our Cobscook Trails Steward with seasonal trail maintenance on any of the Cobscook Trails properties.

If you see a problem while hiking any of these trails, please let us know.

Please follow these guidelines when visiting:

     ·        Sign in and leaves us your comments at the sign-in boxes provided  at

         each site.

     ·        Do not disturb wildlife.

     ·        Stay on marked trails.

     ·        Carry out all trash.

     ·        Observe fire and camping rules (of the sites listed in the guide, fires are allowed only at Cobscook Bay State Park, and camping is allowed only at Cobscook Bay State Park [over 100 campsites] and the Bold Coast Trail in the Cutler Management Unit [3 primitive, hike-in sites).

     ·        Be aware of hunting seasons and wear blaze-orange clothing when visiting sites where hunting is allowed in season.

     ·        ATVs are not permitted on any Cobscook Trails sites.

     ·        Please be careful – your safety is your responsibility.

The Cobscook Trails Sponsors
