Conservation

Since its founding in 1987, the Quoddy Regional Land Trust has protected, on our own and in partnership with others, more than 5,700 acres and 43 miles of fresh and saltwater shorefront.  This land will be conserved forever for wildlife, scenic enjoyment, recreation, and access for traditional uses.

Of this total, QRLT has directly protected more than 2,500 acres and 18 miles of shorefront by ownership and through preservation agreements known as conservation easements.  QRLT currently owns 12 properties totaling 525 acres and 5 miles of shorefront, and holds conservation easements on 21 properties totaling 1,892 acres and 12 miles of shorefront.

QRLT’s main focus area is Cobscook Bay, an estuary of national and international conservation significance, and its watershed.  We have also completed projects on Passamaquoddy Bay, the lower St. Croix River, the Cutler-Lubec coast, and the East Machias River watershed.  While we concentrate our efforts within these focus areas, we are responsive to important projects throughout our eastern Washington County region.

In May 2004, QRLT adopted a set of Guiding Principles and Criteria for Land Protection to help us evaluate potential conservation projects.  Our guiding principles let us consider projects in light of their potential contribution to both local and regional land protection, based on a property’s location, conservation significance, and landscape features.  Our criteria provide an objective method for assessing a property’s conservation values, including ecological, scenic, recreational, productive, geological/hydrological, and historic.

QRLT also evaluates potential projects in terms of cost (is the proposed land or easement offered as a gift, a below market-value sale, or a full market-value sale?) and whether we have the needed staff and financial resources available at the time.  Because of our limited resources, we often work with other organizations such as Maine Coast Heritage Trust to determine if either organization, or both working together, can take on a particular project.

Potential conservation projects  are evaluated initially by the Executive Director and then by QRLT’s Lands Committee.  All projects must be approved by the Board of Trustees.

QRLT works with landowners entirely on a willing donor/willing recipient (or willing seller/willing buyer) basis.  We maintain strict confidentiality in all dealings with landowners, except in the case of purchase campaigns requiring public support and involvement.

Please contact us if you would like to learn more about landowners’ options for protecting their land for public conservation benefit.
