Bailey Field addition is now part of the Pike Lands
Conservation Area
The
summer of 2007, QRLT learned of a conservation opportunity that required
immediate action. The land
next to our Pike Lands Conservation Area on Seward Neck in North Lubec was
newly subdivided. Its
shorefront was too expensive to consider, but the 8.5-acre road-front lot
abutting the Pike Lands was more affordable.
This lot took a bite out the Pike Lands' indented eastern corner,
so a house in the middle of its field would create a big impact on the
Pike Lands' rural setting and reduce views of its wooded, higher ground
from the road. By acquiring the lot, we could protect the Pike Lands'
"scenic gateway," augment its old-farm habitat, and provide
public access to the Pike Lands' rugged eastern portion.

South Bay
Thanks to a
generous previous-year gift by a donor interested in helping us augment
the Pike Lands, some of the funds were already in hand. But
we had only a few weeks to raise the balance.
Thanks, all of you who came through in such short order!
We
will be managing the Bailey Field as part of our Pike Lands Conservation
Area, which will be undergoing management planning in 2008.
Elements of the plan will include creation of a small parking area
and extension of the trail network.
In the meantime, we will be talking to the farmer who most recently
hayed the field, in hopes that we can restore it to its former use.
