QRLT recently
signed an option to purchase the 5-acre Lubec Salt Ponds property at the
deeply discounted price of $71,000. This
diverse property, located at the "S curve" on the South Lubec
Road, has approximately 500 feet of saltwater shorefront, salt marsh, two
salt ponds and a sandy barrier beach with productive clam flats beyond.
Its northern boundary is formed by the outflow stream to
"Pike's Puddle," an important area for waterfowl and wading
birds.
QRLT will acquire
and manage this significant property for public access to the shore and to
protect its varied natural features.
Right now, shore access in this area is via the adjoining property,
a privately owned
and rapidly eroding parcel located at a hazardous bend
in the road. By acquiring the
Salt Ponds, QRLT can guarantee public access, provide safe parking, and
create a footpath that can be used by shellfish harvesters and the general
public to get to the beach and flats.
The Land for
Maine's Future Board has committed $58,000 towards the total project costs
of $128,000. We have also
received support from Maine Coast Heritage Trust.
We
still need to raise $39,500 by the end of March 2008 to exercise our
option and close on the purchase.
Unless we can do this, the property will go on the open market.
The
Lubec Salt Ponds, located at the "S curve" in the South Lubec
Road, offers shore access, a diversity of natural features, outstanding
bird watching, and spectacular views of Lubec village and Campobello
Island across the Lubec Channel.
